Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation

National Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15-October 15 of each year. The national observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson, and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting September 15 and ending October 15 of each year. The month begins September 15 as that is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, followed shortly thereafter by Mexico (September 16) and Chile (September 18). Día de la Raza and Indigenous Peoples Day, recognized on the second Monday of October, also fall within this 30-day period. This year’s theme is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation,” a reminder that diverse voices and perspectives should be welcomed and included as we develop strong communities that contribute to a robust economy and nation.

During this period, we celebrate the achievements, contributions and influence of Hispanic/Latin Americans. Hispanic and Latin people make up approximately 19% of the U. S. population. We recognize the diverse cultures, histories and traditions of Hispanic/Latin Americans whose heritage is rooted in 20 Hispanic/Latin American countries and territories: Spain, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela.
