Connecticut Attorney Summarizes SCOTUS Ruling on Employment Discrimination

On June 15, 2020, the United States Supreme Court ruled on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibiting the discrimination of employees on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Connecticut attorney Stacey L. Samuel explains the ruling in the most recent Litchfield Alert where she provides the background of the ruling, the outcome and what it means for employers.

In her Alert, “SCOTUS Prohibits Employment Discrimination on the Basis of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity,” Stacey summarizes the ruling and the opinions of the Justices in the 6-3 decision, a key argument revolving around whether discrimination against LGBTQ employees could be considered discrimination on the basis of sex. The majority of the Justices ultimately ruled that such employees are explicitly protected by Title VII.

The Litchfield Alert further outlines potential issues insurers and insureds can expect following this decision, and predicts an increase in discrimination claims and unanticipated litigation. To read the full Alert, please click here.
